Spiral vs Wiro vs Thermal:
Which Binding Should You Choose?

By OnlinePrintout Team5 min read

You just printed a 300-page PDF of your study notes. Now, how do you keep it together? Some choose the cheapest option, others go for what looks "cool". But picking the wrong binding can make studying a nightmare.

Let's break down the three most popular binding types available in India: Spiral, Wiro, and Thermal.

1. Spiral Binding (The Student Favorite)

Also known as Coil Binding. This involves punching round holes along the edge of the paper and inserting a continuous plastic coil.

Why it's great:

  • 360° Flip: You can fold the book completely back on itself. Great for saving desk space.
  • Durability: The plastic coil crushes but bounces back. It doesn't bend permanently like metal.
  • Cost: Cheapest option (₹40-₹60).

2. Wiro Binding (The Professional Choice)

Also known as Twin Loop or Double Loop binding. It uses C-shaped metal wire loops that are squeezed closed. It looks much sleeker than the chunky plastic spiral.

Use cases:

  • Presentations: If you are pitching to a client, use Wiro. Spiral looks childish.
  • Resumes/Portfolios: Architects often use Wiro for their A3 portfolios.
  • Calendars: Almost all desk calendars use Wiro.

Downside: If you crush it in your bag, the metal wires bend and stay bent. It's less durable for rough use than Spiral.

3. Thermal Binding (The "Book" Look)

Also known as Perfect Binding or Hot Glue Binding. The pages are glued to the spine of a wrap-around cover. No holes are punched.

Pros

  • Looks like a real paperback book.
  • Easy to stack on shelf (Spine is flat).
  • Professional finish.

Cons

  • Cannot open flat (hard to write in).
  • Pages can fall out if glue is cheap.
  • Cannot add/remove pages later.
